Scanning in black and white

I am using an Epson ES-400 scanner.  The scanner seems to work correctly using their scanning software, but when I am in the PDF24 Creator, it will only work properly if I choose the grayscale option.  If I use black and white or auto it sometimes runs the pages through the scanner like it is working but then nothing comes into the creator, it will just say to drag something in.  Then sometimes it just skips some of the pages.  It works perfectly in grayscale.  Do you have any ideas what I should try?
