Split pdf by page range without using page mode

Hello,

Is it possible to extract a specific range of pages from a pdf and save it as a separate pdf, without ever having to deal with page mode? Page mode is not very fun when you're dealing with very large pdfs.

If not, why is this not possible? It would seem easier than going about it via page mode...
