Hello,
I am trying to use PDF printer with BarTender program. It looks like that BarTender generated the label print job but the print job is error out in the printer queue. The label output to pdf file to a local folder on the c: drive. The PDF24 service is running and all setup are on the same PC. What am I missing? Any suggestion?
It worked when I open a word doc file and print to the PDF24 printer but not through BarTender program.

I am assuming that the Service user does not have permissions to files/folders somewhere
2023-01-04 at 16:25 #63036Stefan ZieglerKeymasterOwner of the print JOB is SYSTEM which is a special account in windows. This is not a real user account and PDF24 is unable to submit the print job to the right user. Therefore PDF24 can not handle it. It is important, that the USER of the print job is a real user so that PDF24 can submit the job the that user.

Is there any logs I can look at to give any more information? I have just installed the latest version as I saw there were some updates regarding permissions
2023-01-04 at 17:00 #64495Stefan ZieglerKeymasterThe windows printer queue is one step ahead of PDF24. If the user is not correct here, then you have to look for the problem when printing....

2026-10-30 at 10:18 #64855PDF24 SupportModeratorHello,
yes. The problem occurs when the print job comes from an account that has no user session, for example SYSTEM or a service account of a program. PDF24 normally hands every print job over to PDF24 in the session of the user who prints. For such accounts there is no session, so the job stays in the queue with an error.
For this case there is the option "Save with the PDF24 Windows Service". The PDF24 service then saves the file itself, also when nobody is logged in:
- Open the PDF24 settings, section "PDF Printer", and click "Run as administrator". The option is only shown with administrator rights.
- Select the PDF24 printer and choose "Automatically save documents after printed" under "PDF Printer Tool". Enter the output directory under "Auto Save".
- Tick "Save with the PDF24 Windows Service" and save the settings.
- Delete the stuck jobs in the print queue and restart the Windows service "PDF24" (or the computer). In the current version the option only takes effect after a restart of the service.
The PDF24 service runs as "Local System" and saves the file with this account, so it is best to use a local folder that this account can write to.
This option is made for the classic PDF printer. If your PDF24 printer is the driverless printer (Windows Protected Print), we recommend a classic PDF printer for print jobs from service accounts: in the settings under "PDF Printer" click the + button ("Install a PDF printer"), choose the type "PostScript" and click "Install". Then set up the options above for this printer and print from your program to it.
