Do this: Open the PDF24 Creator and load a pdf to edit it. Right click on the same of the document, this opens the context menu. Choose properties and than security. There you can make security settings of a document. Save the file if you have finished.
You can check the password request if you open the file with Adobe Reader.
2009-09-23 at 12:36 #3314PDF24GuestCan i protect my pdf with a password so that only people can read the pdf which have the password?
You said on some pages of your site that i can password protect a pdf. I cant find where to do.
2011-03-17 at 23:10 #3316AnonymousGuestI have previously used the security settings to create passwords on PDF files, but when I tried to do that today, there is no password option on the security tab. Am I missing a step somewhere?
2011-12-07 at 20:00 #3317AnonymousGuestThe instructions are kind of confusing....
To do this, you must use the PDF editor, hit SAVE and it will bring up the window with all the options. One of the option is "SECURITY". Click on that and then fill in your information.
2011-12-15 at 08:18 #3318AnonymousGuestYes, use the Save As dialog. There are all options. This has changed during the last new version. In older versions there was a properties dialog where you could do security settings but in newer version all options are centralized and can be used in PDF24 Editor as well as in PDF24 Assistant.
2012-05-07 at 05:11 #3319AnonymousGuestI was able to set password by using Save As dialog. I did same thing again with another pdf file, it did work.I have tried it several times, it just didn't require password to open although I did set password. could you please let me know why and how to set security password? Thanks!
June2014-01-03 at 22:48 #764tfitz999ParticipantHi,
Using the PDF Print program, is there a way to have the PDF file password protected (either by zipping with a password or some other way) before attaching to the email?I would be willing to pay for this feature.
Thanks,

2014-06-10 at 11:18 #1602pdf24MemberClick the save as button and create a custom profile there. There you can also set a password for the file. After you have created a custom profile you can select that one via the profile selection box. Select your profile and click the email button. You custom profile will then be applied and your PDF in the email will be password protected.
2014-08-29 at 20:17 #1604peter_s_nlParticipantI've tried several times to protect a PDF with a password.
I checked the checkbox to protect a PDF with a password; typed the password and then Continue.
The PDF will be stored om my disk and when I double click it will open without asking a password.Maybe I am doing something wrong, but I've read the instruction several times and I don't know what is going wrong.

2014-09-01 at 07:52 #1605pdf24MemberPlease enter the user password. There are two password fields. The first one is to encrypt the file and to apply the file permissions and second one has to be entered to open the file.
2014-09-01 at 09:00 #1603peter_s_nlParticipantI did exactly what you described, but still I could open the generated PDF form without password.
2018-08-21 at 12:42 #5537ladinsGuestCan I safe PDF file with password by means of PDF creator? Or do I have to use only online editor? Thank you very much 🙂
2018-08-21 at 12:44 #5539Stefan ZieglerKeymasterYou can also use the PDF24 Creator to save with password. Hit the Save As button and open the PDF security page and there you can set the PDF password. Both tools, the online version and the PDF24 Creator use AES 256 Bit for security.

2026-10-31 at 22:40 #65788PDF24 SupportModeratorHello,
as of today (the dialogs described in the older answers have changed), there are these ways:
An existing PDF: open the PDF24 Toolbox, choose Protect PDF, add your PDF and enter the User password. That is the password needed to open the PDF. The Owner password is only for the permissions (printing, copying ...). This also works online: https://tools.pdf24.org/en/protect-pdf
When printing to the PDF24 PDF printer: in the PDF24 Assistant that opens, click Save as... and go to Security:
- Tick Use security settings.
- Tick Password to open PDF required? and enter the Password to open PDF.
If you only fill in Password for encryption, the PDF is protected against changes but opens without a password. That was the reason in some of the posts above.
Protected PDF as an e-mail attachment: in the Assistant, choose Custom... in the profile box above the buttons and click Send by Email. The same dialog opens; set the password under Security as above and click Continue. The PDF attached to the e-mail is then protected.
Changing or removing the password of your own PDF: use Unlock PDF in the PDF24 Toolbox and enter the current password, then protect the file again with a new password if needed. Online: https://tools.pdf24.org/en/unlock-pdf
