Why, if PDF24 is set to autostart with computer startup, do I still have to start it manually after every reboot the first time I want to print something?
I am running the latest version of Windows 10. PDF24 Creator is set to autostart on computer startup. The exe file is in C://ProgramData/MIcrosoft/Windows/Start Menu/Programs/PDF24 and the tray icon and menu are present. However, the first time I try to print after a reboot, I get an PDF Printer Error message (with error 0X***705) and a popup window appears telling me that PDF Creator is not started. When I start PDF24 by clicking the start button in the popup window, a Windows command window appears, PDF24 is started, and the PDF Assistant loads. Everything then works normally until the next reboot. I never had this problem until I updated to the 2017 Fall Creators Update of Win 10. Is there a way to ensure that the program fully auto starts?
PDF24 uses a Windows Service to redirect the print jobs from the PDF printer to the user. This service has the name PDF24 and you can normally see the service in the Windows service manager. The pdf24.exe provides this service. If the PDF24 service is stopped or get terminated by another application, then the PDF printer will not work and the mentioned message pops up that this service is stopped. You can restart the service with the button in the message. You can also control the service via the net stop pdf24 and net start pdf24 shell commands like you can do with any other service too. The key is to keep the PDF24 service running. Do not stop the service, otherwise the PDF24 PDF printer will not work.
Sometimes we have seen some timeout issues on specific computers. You can check that in the Windows Event Log View, but if that happens, then something other must be wrong with your Windows.
in case of this error: unfortunately our users can not start the service via the pdf24-assistant for themselves, the option is active but does not work (they are normal users without any admin rights)
Have the same at our site with one machine. All others working well.
Can't find the difference.
