    Hello,

the OCR tool stores its temporary files in the Windows temporary folder, in the subfolder PDF24. You can open it by typing %TEMP%\PDF24 into the address bar of Explorer. There is no separate setting in PDF24 for this location; it follows the Windows variables TMP and TEMP.

The page images and the recognized text of each file are kept while the OCR tool is open, so that a second run with changed settings does not have to start from scratch. They are deleted when you close the OCR tool. If the tool stays open for days with many files, the folder grows accordingly, so please close it after a large batch. Files left over after a crash can be deleted when no PDF24 program is open.

With the next version, PDF24 deletes leftovers in this folder that are older than two days automatically, and the uninstallation removes the PDF24 temporary folders.

Thank you for the suggestion to delete the page images already during the recognition and to move the result instead of copying it, we will add it to our list.

OCR is also available online: https://tools.pdf24.org/en/ocr-pdf

    Hello,

thank you for the report and sorry for the late answer. This is a bug: Windows does not let the save dialog that PDF24 opens with "Automatically save documents after printed" and "Use a file name chooser before saving the file" come to the front, so it stays behind the program you print from. The fix will come with the next version; the dialog will then appear in the foreground.

Until then, the dialog can be found in the taskbar or with Alt+Tab.

    Hello,

thank you, crazz, for sharing your workaround. For anyone finding this topic today: please update to the current version first. Since version 11.21.0, pdf24-Ocr.exe prints its error messages on the command line, so the cause is visible instead of an empty result. In the same version, locally installed language files work again on the command line.

The result is written to the file given with -outputFile as a normal file copy, so the output may be on a different drive than the PDF24 installation. If the command fails, no output file is created. The options are described in the manual: https://creator.pdf24.org/manual/11/#101-command-line

If the current version still gives you an empty or missing file, please post the complete command line and the console output here. So that we can reproduce this, please send us a file where it happens with this button:

    Hello,

-shellPrint always prints directly without a dialog. For a print dialog, use the PDF24 Reader instead of the DocTool in your command (pdf24-Reader.exe is in the PDF24 installation folder):

    pdf24-Reader.exe /printDialog /printTo "NAME" "${file}"

/printDialog opens only the print dialog of the PDF24 Reader with a preview, without the Reader window. /printTo preselects the printer, which can still be changed in the dialog. The file is printed when the user clicks "Print"; on cancel nothing is printed. The switch is available since version 11.31.0.

In this dialog you can choose the printer, paper size, duplex, grayscale, copies and the pages. Settings that only the printer driver offers, such as the output tray, are not in it. With the next version, the PDF24 Settings get the option "Always print using the system dialog instead of the PDF24 print dialog" under Reader. With this option, the same command opens the Windows print dialog of the printer directly, with all driver settings, as you described.

    Hello,

thank you, you are right. The Sign PDF tool of PDF24 Toolbox still uses the previous editor, and there Select stroke color has no visible effect on text because there is no stroke width. We have added this to our list.

Until then, set the color of a text in the Toolbox with Select fill color.

    Hello,

sorry for the late reply. The page display of PDF24 Toolbox has changed several times since then. Please update to the current version first: https://tools.pdf24.org/en/creator

If the message still appears, please tell us in which tool exactly it happens (Extract PDF pages, or one of the tools Edit PDF, Annotate PDF, Blacken PDF or Sign PDF). So that we can reproduce this, please send us a file where it happens with this button:

Extracting pages also works online: https://tools.pdf24.org/en/extract-pdf-pages

    Hello,

sorry for the late reply. In Edit PDF of PDF24 Toolbox, Opacity always applies to the whole shape, fill and outline together, so the outline fades with it.

A frame with only an outline works online: https://tools.pdf24.org/en/edit-pdf - there, rectangles and circles are drawn as an outline without fill, and the small menu at the selected shape has a No fill button.

Thank you for the suggestion to set the opacity of fill and outline separately in the Toolbox, we will add it to our list.

    Hello,

sorry for the late reply. Extracting the XML file (and other attachments) automatically comes with the next version of PDF24 Creator: the DocTool gets the command line function -extractAttachments, and PDF24 Toolbox gets the tool Extract PDF attachments. Details and an example are in your other topic: https://help.pdf24.org/en/?p=64165

    Hello,

sorry for the late reply. The link goes from the printer to the profile, not the other way round:

    • SOFTWARE\PDF24\Services\<ID> (e.g. XSPDP92ZBU) is the entry of one PDF printer. In HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE it contains the value Port, the port of this printer in Windows (see https://creator.pdf24.org/manual/11/#61-ports). That is how you find out which entry belongs to which printer.
    • The settings of the printer are stored under the same ID, in HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE or, if they were saved without administrator rights, as user settings in HKEY_CURRENT_USER. Values in HKEY_CURRENT_USER override those in HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE, unless the administrator has switched off Users can override settings.
    • The value AutoSaveProfile there names the profile used for Auto Save. For your own profile it is user/LIW_PDF24, which refers to HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\PDF24\Profiles\fo\LIW_PDF24. Profiles under HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE are written as all/<name>, the built-in profiles as default/<name>.

So to find the printer that uses LIW_PDF24, look for the Services entry whose AutoSaveProfile is user/LIW_PDF24, and then compare its Port with the ports of your printers.

The easier way is in the PDF24 settings: PDF Printer, select the printer, choose Automatically save documents after printed and select your profile under Profile.

    Hello,

this is controlled by the option Collect files in the window "Select source", which appears before scanning and where you click on your scanner:

    • Collect files checked: PDF24 collects all scanned pages and passes them to the PDF24 Creator together as one file when scanning is finished. The Creator then only comes up once at the end.
    • Collect files not checked: each page is passed to the Creator as a separate file as soon as it has been scanned, so the Creator comes up after every page.

Please check Collect files and then click on your scanner. PDF24 remembers this option, so you only need to set it once.

Choosing a scanner in advance, so that the window "Select source" is skipped, is not possible yet. It is on our to-do list.

    Hello,

there is no DPI setting for HTML in the PDF24 Toolbox. Since version 11.31.0, PDF24 converts PDF to HTML with its own converter (Convert from PDF, format HTML, mode Complete). It takes over the images of the PDF as separate images in their original resolution, so they are not reduced to a fixed DPI. Only content that cannot be taken over as a separate image is drawn into a page background, which has a fixed resolution of 150 DPI.

If you are still using an older version, please update and try again. The conversion is also available online: https://tools.pdf24.org/en/pdf-to-html

Thank you for the suggestion of a DPI setting for HTML, we will add it to our list.

    Hello,

thank you for the report. You are right: when PDF24 splits a PDF, each part is put together from the pages, and the layer definitions of the original file are currently not taken over into the parts. This applies to the PDF24 Toolbox and to the online tool https://tools.pdf24.org/en/split-pdf alike.

We will add it to our list so that the parts keep their layers. We will post here when it is available.

    Hello,

the thumbnails come from the PDF24 thumbnail handler. Windows uses it when PDF24 Reader is set as the default app for PDF files. If you set another program as the default app for PDF files, PDF24 no longer creates them.

With the next version you can switch them off without changing the default app: in the PDF24 Settings under Reader > File Explorer, untick Show thumbnails of PDF files (the preview pane can be switched off there too).

    Hello,

an update for today's readers of this older topic: Editing existing content (changing the existing text and images of a page) is in the works and will be released with one of the upcoming versions once it is finished. We will post here when it is available.

Until then you can replace a name or an address like this:

    1. Open the PDF in https://tools.pdf24.org/en/redact-pdf, choose White as the color and drag a box over the text. The text under the box is removed when saving, the area stays white.
    2. Open the saved PDF in https://tools.pdf24.org/en/edit-pdf and add your new text at the same place.

Placing an image or a white shape over the text, as described above, only hides it: the old text stays in the file and can still be found or copied. Step 1 removes it.

If the empty fields in your document are form fields, you can fill them in directly: https://tools.pdf24.org/en/fill-out-pdf

    Hello,

this message comes from the new Outlook. PDF24 Creator supports the new Outlook since version 11.28.0, with the email interface "Outlook New".

    1. Update PDF24 Creator to the latest version: https://tools.pdf24.org/en/creator
    2. Open the PDF24 Settings (PDF24 icon in the notification area of the taskbar › Settings).
    3. On the page "Email Interface" choose "Outlook New".

Then send the PDF again. With "Outlook New", PDF24 hands the email over as an EML file, so your Outlook signature is not added automatically.

If the attachments are still empty after that, please let us know here.

    Hello,

this is possible now in the online PDF editor: https://tools.pdf24.org/en/edit-pdf

Add a text with "Insert text" and open the font list in the small toolbar of the selected text:

    • "+ Load custom font…" loads a TTF or OTF font file from your computer.
    • "Installed fonts…" lets you pick a font installed on your computer. This option appears in Chromium-based browsers such as Chrome or Edge.

Fonts whose license does not allow embedding and font collections (TTC files) cannot be used.

page numbers are now placed according to the orientation you see on the screen: on a rotated page, "bottom center" ends up at the bottom of the page as displayed, and the number is upright. Converting the pages to images is no longer necessary.

Please also tell us where you see the blue squares: in "Try it out" of https://tools.pdf24.org/en/create-fillable-pdf-form (in which browser?) or in the downloaded PDF (in which PDF program?).

    Hello,

yes. Since version 11.31.0 the PDF24 Reader submits form data to http and https addresses. It follows the settings of the submit action in the PDF: FDF (the default), XFDF, HTML form data or the whole PDF. Before sending, the Reader asks whether you want to allow the submission to the address shown, and after sending it reports "Form data submitted".

The message you saw came from an older version. Please update PDF24 Creator to the current version and try again.

If the message still appears with the current version, please send us your test file so that we can reproduce this with this button:

in reply to: Printing via network share #65268

    Hello,

yes, this works. Set it up on the computer where PDF24 is installed and the printer is shared:

    1. Use the classic PDF printer for sharing. If your PDF printer is the driverless one, add a classic one in the PDF24 settings under "PDF Printer" with the "+" button and the type "PostScript" (see https://creator.pdf24.org/manual/11/#63-classic-and-driverless-pdf-printers). Share this printer in Windows.
    2. Open the PDF24 settings as administrator ("Run as administrator" in the settings). Only then the settings apply to all users and the following options are shown.
    3. Select the shared printer under "PDF Printer", choose "Automatically save documents after printed" and enter the output directory under "Auto Save".
    4. Tick "Save with the PDF24 Windows Service". Then the PDF24 service saves the files itself, also when nobody is logged in on that computer. The service runs under the system account, so a local folder is best. Alternatively, "Save with the following user" saves with a user who must then be logged in with PDF24 running.
    5. Restart the computer once after enabling "Save with the PDF24 Windows Service". With the next version this is no longer necessary.

Without these settings, PDF24 hands every print job to the user who printed it, and a user from another computer has no session on the server. That is why the jobs failed when nobody was logged in.

To the question about the owner name: the file name for automatic saving can contain $owner, the name of the user who printed, e.g. $owner $fileName.

in reply to: PDF24 DocTool: log file for -join in silent mode #65264
    PDF24 Support
    Moderator

    Hello,

since version 11.31.0 the DocTool has the option -silent for unattended use. In silent mode no dialogs are shown. Instead, each error is written as a line starting with error: to the error output (stderr), and the DocTool ends with an exit code that tells you what went wrong, e.g. 0 = success, 2 = no input files, 6 = an operation failed. A successful run writes nothing.

So in your script you can wait for the DocTool, check the exit code and redirect its error output into a file. Then you have a log of the failed runs.

    Details in the manual:

A separate log file option with more details does not exist yet. Thank you for the suggestion, we will add it to our list.

    Hello,

first create a PDF from your Word document (e.g. print it to the PDF24 printer). Then there are two ways:

    1. Online: open the PDF at https://tools.pdf24.org/en/create-pdf-booklet and choose "A3 – booklet in A4" under "Paper for printing". With "Save as PDF" you get the A3 sheets as a PDF, with "Print" you print them directly.
    2. With PDF24 Creator 11.31.0 or newer: open the PDF in the PDF24 Reader and click "Print". Tick "Booklet" in the print dialog and choose A3 under "Paper size". As printer choose your A3 printer.

For a 4-page document the first sheet then has page 4 and page 1 on the front and pages 2 and 3 on the back, as you described. If your printer cannot print on both sides, print the front and back sides separately ("Subset" in the Reader, the online tool guides you through it).

    Hello,

the PDF printer only knows the folder of the original file if the program you print from sends the full file path with the print job. Many programs only send the file name. If the path is sent, "Save" in the PDF24 Assistant (the window after printing) opens in the folder of the original file, unless a "Fixed save directory" is set on the "Assistant" page of the settings. Automatic saving of the PDF printer always uses the folder set there.

For the tools of the PDF24 Toolbox such as "Sign PDF" or "Edit PDF", the save dialog currently opens in the folder used last. With the next version it suggests the folder of the original file.

    Hello,

since version 11.25.0 the font list in "Annotate PDF", "Edit PDF" and "Sign PDF" shows only the font families, so "Tahoma Bold" is no longer a separate entry. Choose "Tahoma" and click the bold button ("Make font bold") next to the font size. The bold and italic buttons are available again in "Annotate PDF" since version 11.26.0. Please update to the current version: https://tools.pdf24.org/en/creator

Fonts in the OpenType formats .otf and .ttc are currently not shown in the list. This is on our to-do list. If a font is missing that is not one of these, please tell us its name.

    This also works online: https://tools.pdf24.org/en/annotate-pdf

    Hello,

this is most likely a problem with the page size. Up to the current version, the PDF printer places the digital paper at the bottom left corner of the page without scaling it. If the printed page is smaller than your letterhead, for example Letter instead of A4, the top part of the letterhead with the logo falls off the page, while the rest is shown. The fix will come with the next version, the letterhead is then fitted to the page.

    Until then:

If the printed page is already A4 and the logo is still missing, so that we can reproduce this, please send us your letterhead PDF and a PDF where it happens with this button:

    Hello,

the dark mode only changes the Reader window itself (toolbars, panels and the area around the pages). The pages of the document are not changed by it.

Since version 11.31.0 the Reader can also recolor the pages for reading in low light: click "More" (the button with the three dots) in the toolbar and choose "Page colors" > "Dimmed", "Smart dark" or "Full invert". In the same menu, "Theme" switches the window between System, Light and Dark without restarting. The page colors apply until you close the Reader.

Please update to the current version: https://tools.pdf24.org/en/creator

    Hello,

the PDF printer only knows the folder of the original file if the program you print from sends the full file path as the document name of the print job. Many programs only send the file name, and then PDF24 cannot know the folder.

    Where the save dialog opens:

    • In the PDF24 Assistant (the window that opens after printing), "Save" opens in the folder of the original file if it is known. If "Fixed save directory" is set on the "Assistant" page of the settings, that folder is used instead. Otherwise the last used folder is used, or the desktop.
    • If the printed document is opened in the PDF24 Creator, the folder from the print job is currently not used.

We could not find a change in this behavior in the recent versions. So that we can check your case, please tell us:

    1. From which program do you print?
    2. Which window opens after printing, the PDF24 Assistant or the PDF24 Creator?
    3. Which version worked as expected, and which version do you use now?

when you start Import from scanner or camera from the PDF24 Toolbox, the Toolbox closes and the scanned document opens in the PDF24 Creator window. That window has no button back to the Toolbox, but you have these options:

    • Open the PDF24 Toolbox again from the Start menu (entry PDF24) or the desktop icon. The PDF24 Creator window can stay open.
    • For further scans you don't need the Toolbox: in the PDF24 Creator window choose File > Import > From scanner or camera....

    Hello,

since version 11.31.0, PDF24 Reader remembers more than before:

    • When you start the Reader without a file, the start screen shows your recently opened files. The Open button in the toolbar also has a drop-down with Open recent file.
    • Reopen files from last session (on the start screen and in the drop-down of the Open button) opens the files that were open when you last closed the Reader, each one on the page where you left it.
    • The settings are behind the ⋮ button (More) in the toolbar under Settings.

A PDF that you open on its own, for example by double-clicking it, still starts at the beginning. Remembering the last page for every document is still on our to-do list.
